Perforated Metal Side Table in the style of Mategot, Melbourne c.1955
Perforated Metal Side Table in the style of Mategot, Melbourne c.1955
What a charmer! Mid-century, with a touch of Jean Royere in the cross-over legs, a bit of Mathieu Mategot in the perforated top, this small table however has a robust handmade aesthetic - the shape and construction is slightly stricter, less sinuous than Royere.
Unlike Mategot's work the finish is not perfectly polished. Those lovely hoof-like feet have been hewn and worked by a craftsman, not to have caps put over them but to add visual weight and balance to the construction. A possible manufacturer is Ramler Furniture.
The Hirst archive has confirmed this is not a design or product by Michael Hirst.
