BECO (Brown Evans and Co.) Copper Chandelier, Commissioned by Anatol Kagan, Melbourne 1950s
BECO (Brown Evans and Co.) Copper Chandelier, Commissioned by Anatol Kagan, Melbourne 1950s
This magnificent copper chandelier in the style of Stilnovo was a private commission for a 1950s Melbourne architectural project in Caulfield. The lighting was designed and produced by Brown Evans and Co. (BECO) in close consultation with the architect, Anatol Kagan.
Guy Brown, archivist of BECO (his father Donald Brown's lighting company), has inspected these lights and given his confirmation that they were produced by BECO Lighting. Guy confirmed that Donald Brown consulted closely with architects and designers to meet their requirements for individual commissions throughout the life of the company.
The rarity and quality of BECO private commissions is legendary. Watch out for the two wall lights that match this chandelier in our other listings.
Cabinet de Luxe salvaged all these lights from the refit of a Mid-Century Modern home in Caulfield, Melbourne. The building at 380 Glen Eira Road Caulfield was designed by Russian emigre architect Anatol Kagan.
You can see original images of the property on the Modernist Australia website, where it is featured among several of Kagan's residential works. This light and the matching wall lights were designed for the main living area - this over the dining table while the matching wall lights were in the adjoining sitting room.
