Minimalist Studio Vase, signed Robin 1989, possibily Robin Welch
SOLD - Capella
A refined and shapely decorative stoneware vase with white to gray banded salt glaze. Signed and dated 89’, by Rabin or Robin - research ongoing to ID artist.
After the over-decorated folk/craft movement of the 1970s, studio potters in the 1980s strove for technical precision. There was a strong movement towards minimalism.
Chief proponents of this style where Alessio Tasca in Italy, Robin Welch in England and Gwen Pigott in Australia.
This is a lovely example of the minimalist style - a technically difficult shape, a focus on symmetry, a lack of adornment.
In this piece, a precise incised line borders the indented lip, the salt glaze is devoid of colour and gives a subtle tonal quality, the light touch of glaze at the mouth of the vase highlights its earthenware material. This vase feels almost like a natural artefact, formed among the planets by natural forces.
This was the purpose of the minimalist movement. To bring the work back to to just minerals, physics and heat, expressing purity of form.
