Pair of Cast Bronze Clamshell Push and Pull Door Handles circa 1965
Pair of Cast Bronze Clamshell Push and Pull Door Handles circa 1965
A pair of cast bronze clamshell 'push and pull' door handles. Each shell is slightly different. They've been forged using the 'lost wax' method from a plaster casting of real clam shells. The casts have then been aligned and fittings added.
Made to fit a plate glass door, the correct door thickness when fitted to the bolts is approximately 14 mm. The distance is adjustable and therefore the fittings will also suite a timber door, but if the timber door is very thick a new set of bolts may need to be cut. These were sourced from the grand front entrance of an old Queensland beachside hotel/club.
Fitting: One handle attaches directly to two threaded 12mm bolts and a high quality bronze lug or washer is then threaded onto each bolt. The bolts are then placed through two corresponding holes cut in the door. On the second side another high quality bronze lug or washer fits on each bolt, followed by the second handle. This is then secured with grub screws using a Hex or Allen key. All the hardware parts are present and in excellent working order. The whole set has been carefully cleaned and tested and lugs polished.
