Restored Black Steel 'Servofumo' Ashtray by Castiglioni for Zanotta, 1961
Achille Castiglioni for Zanotta, designed 1961, this production early 1980s.
'Servomuto' is a series of "changing servants", designed by Castiglioni from 1961 to 1987 - a set of service objects, each based on a central leg with a weighted conical base. They offer complete convenience at the correct height for use and without obstruction, whether the user is seated or standing. The series includes a portable side table, this ashtray and an umbrella stand.
The smooth handle and 'just right' weight make this a deeply satisfying object to use.
This classic design object has been completely stripped and recoated. It's in great, clean condition and ready for a multitude of uses. It makes a super-handy caddy - a place to put your mobile phone, headphones, earbuds, wallet, keys or other small stuff you don't want cluttering surfaces but that you want to keep convenient at home, in the hallway or bedroom or by your desk.
Servofumo, as the name suggests, was designed for smoking, with the bowl to be filled with sand.
Sure, you can use it for this, but other uses in a post-smoking world are limited only by imagination.
