Frances (Frankie) Mallalieu Payne (1885-1975) is a widely collected Australian artist known for her studies of children and beach scenes. In this lovely work the colours of a tropical sunset are transposed with consumate skill. 

Oil on board, signed lower right and annotated to reverse, 'Sunset in Borneo' by Frank Payne, Royal Art Society Exhibition, Sept. 1957'. The painting has been professionally cleaned and glazed and replaced in it's original frame. 

The frame is a lovely example of mid 1950s framing craft, hand-carved and gilded.
